J'ai profité de ce samedi ensoleillé pour découvrir Ypres (Ieper en néerlandais) que je ne connaissais pas du tout. Il y a une agréable promenade à effectuer le long des remparts construits par l'architecte Vauban. Ils aboutissent à la Porte de Menin qui est un imposant mémorial en l'honneur des plus de 50.000 militaires britanniques décédés dans la région d'Ypres durant la première guerre mondiale. C'est très émouvant de lire tous ces noms gravés sur les murs blancs. Chaque soir à 20h, on y joue le Last Post. Ypres (http://www.ieper.be/) est une ville calme et paisible avec beaucoup de bâtiments de style architectural flamand traditionnel. La grand-place est dominée par la majestueuse Halle aux Draps qui rappelle que la cité doit sa prospérité à l'industrie drapière. Elle abrite aujourd'hui le musée "In Flanders Fields" (http://www.inflandersfields.be/). Inauguré en 1998, ce musée interactif et moderne est consacré à la première guerre mondiale. Prévoyez du temps pour le visiter car il y a beaucoup de textes à lire, d'ordinateurs à consulter, de vidéos et d'objets à regarder, mais ce musée est vraiment très bien fait. Derrière la Halle aux Draps se trouve la cathédrale Saint-Martin (de style gothique) qui a été reconstruite à l'identique après sa destruction durant la guerre. A noter que les panneaux explicatifs des remparts, du musée et de la cathédrale sont quadrilingues (néerlandais/français/ anglais/allemand). Si on ressent très fort le poids de l'Histoire à Ypres, cette charmante petite ville abrite également de nombreux magasins, restaurants et cafés.

Il y a bien des choses à voir dans notre "petit" pays, ce patchwork de morceaux d'histoire, de folklore, de Flandre et de Wallonie, de coutumes, de recettes, de braves gens et de querelles!
Je me demande si la reine d'Angleterre ne s'est pas rendue au cimetière militaire d'Ypres en juillet 2008.
Pierre-Jean, je viens de vérifier : la reine Elisabeth II et le duc d'Edimbourg sont venus une journée en Belgique en juillet 2007 pour célébrer le 90ème anniversaire de la bataille de Passendaele (qui a eu lieu en 1917 non loin d'Ypres). Accompagnés de la reine Paola (le roi Albert II étant dans le plâtre), les souverains britanniques se sont arrêtés à la Porte de Menin à Ypres pour une brève cérémonie et un dépôt de fleurs, avant de gagner les lieux de la bataille de Passendaele.
La reine Elisabeth II s'était déjà rendue à Ypres le 11 novembre 1998 pour les 80 ans de la signature de l'armistice. Après avoir assisté à une commémoration à Paris avec le président Jacques Chirac, la Reine était arrivée en fin d'après-midi à l'aéroport de Wevelgem et avait rejoint le roi Albert, la reine Paola et la présidente irlandaise Mary Mc Aleese. Les trois chefs d'Etat ont assisté ensemble à une cérémonie au mémorial irlandais de Messines et à une cérémonie à la Porte de Menin à Ypres (dont j'ai parlé dans mon article).
Je ne sais pas s'il y a eu, avant 1998, d'autres visites de la famille royale britannique à Ypres. Bon dimanche Pierre-Jean.

En effet petit Belge, 2007 et pas 2008, merci d'avoir rectifié et confirmé qu'elle s'y était bien rendue, je me souviens de sa visite en 98, mais je ne savais pas qu'elle s'était rendue dans cette belle ville qui, manifestement, a un très beau et spacieux monument pour commémorer les morts de la Première Guerre Mondiale; sur le liens que tu nous as proposé, j'ai remarqué qu'il y a aussi un cimetière militaire.
